Victory Gardens Theater will stage the first made-in-Chicago production of the Tony award-winning musical "Fun Home" as part of its 43rd season of shows, the Lincoln Park company announced Tuesday.
Gary Griffin will direct the critically acclaimed musical, based on the graphic novel by Alison Bechdel and set in a funeral home, with music by Jeanine Tesori and book and lyrics by Lisa Kron. In an interview with the Tribune Monday, artistic director Chay Yew said his hope was to cast the show entirely with Chicago-based performers. ("Fun Home" plays Sept. 19 to Nov. 12)
Later in the fall, Victory Gardens will stage the Chicago premiere of "Fade" by Tanya Saracho, a play set behind the scenes in the TV-writing business. "Fade" (which opened in January at Primary Stages in New York) will be a co-production with Teatro Vista, a resident company at Victory Gardens. The show will be directed here by Sandra Marquez. (Nov. 4 to Dec. 23)
"Breach: a manifesto on race in america through the eyes of a black girl recovering from self-hate" will be staged in early 2018. The work of the writer Antoinette Nwandu, this coming-of-age story will be directed at Victory Gardens by Lisa Portes. (Feb. 9 to March 11, 2018)
Next Yew will direct "Doing It" by Boo Killebrew, a play about a woman who has been released from prison and is trying to begin a productive new life. This will be the first time Victory Gardens has staged Killebrew’s work. (April 6 to May 6, 2018)
The season concludes with Dexter Bullard’s production of "Mies Julie," as adapted from the naturalistic August Strindberg play by the writer Yael Farber. (May 25 to June 24, 2018)
